Being on stage at The Montessori Event in Orlando in March 2024 to speak in front of thousands of Montessorians, in my language, and openly referring to myself as mestiza is something I would never have imagined for myself. Afterward, I received so many comments from a diverse group of people, including African Americans, Latinos, men, women, and white people. Everyone said that my message was powerful and my story was beautiful. Sharing that I owed much of it to my daughter Gisela made it all feel very special.

People said that it was incredible to be recognized as their voice, and it left a powerful impact on them. I am a humble person and don't consider myself amazing or important. I am a human being who has always welcomed diversity. I have welcomed diversity in my classrooms when I was a guide, in all cultures of our staff when I was a coach, and in embracing multiculturalism with adult learners as an instructor.

The message I wanted to spread during my speech is to be proud of who you are and love the star within yourself. Be rooted and comfortable in your own skin. I want this message to motivate children to be proud of their heritage. I emphasized that guides should embrace diversity all year long, not just during specific history months. Montessori education is a way of life, connecting oneself to everything outside, including nature, people, and animals.

I try to convey this message to the children I work with and to the many learners I have the chance to work with now that I am a consultant. I help schools, through parents and professionals, understand the importance of multiculturalism and embrace it in their classrooms.

Inspired by Supportive and Strong Women

It was surreal—being on stage sharing my story and journey with thousands of people from across the globe. I am thankful for the people who supported me, starting with my certification institute, the Institute for Montessori Advanced Montessori Studies and with Hilary Green. Another person who trained me as a coach and inspired me was Elizabeth Slade, who now runs Public Montessori in Action International.

Many women continue to inspire me, but one that is always in my heart is Antonia Cobo, my grandmother from my mother's side. She was from a town called Latacunga which is outside of Quito, in my country, Ecuador. She said that she walked from Latacunga to Quito which took her a couple of days. That was her journey, and she found my grandfather who was also a very special person, and they connected and raised a beautiful family.

My grandmother was humble, sweet, and always positive. She could laugh about herself despite having had a tough life. Her positivity and motivation were contagious, and she always had a smile on her face. She was the third child of a single mother. She raised my mother and other children, making sure they were all able to go to college despite their poverty. My grandmother worked hard as a vendor in the market and then started her own supermarket, which grew to several supermarkets. Her success is a testament to believing in yourself, working hard and staying positive. I think these are the most important lessons that I learned from her.

The Montessori Event Affinity Space Networking Session

The day of the AMS en Español Affinity Space networking session at The Montessori Event 2024 was very joyful. Everyone was happy to connect in person. About 50 people attended the session, and we started sharing our stories.

There are always newcomers to the AMS en Español Affinity Group these days, so it's important to share why we created a space for Latinos and anyone else who wants to embrace the Spanish language in the Montessori movement with AMS. It was a dream that started 14 years ago, and when it became a reality, it motivated people to be heard and seen in a way that hadn't happened before.

It's a special connection when you talk to someone in their native language. When you talk to me in Spanish, my heart lights up, and it's a different connection than I have with others. We talked about how we can continue embracing this space, the importance of doing professional development, and how we invite the members to share their experiences every month. We have people who talk about the importance of bilingual education in general, not just Montessori education.

I hope that AMS can help create and inspire more bilingual Montessori certification programs in Spanish. The demand is high, and I have received countless emails asking for information about where to find Spanish-language certification programs. Many schools have approached me for help in implementing a Montessori bilingual program. Without more of these programs, there will continue to be a scarcity of certified Spanish-English bilingual Montessori guides and assistants, and children across the country will continue to be deprived of the glorious opportunity to receive a bilingual Montessori education.

Multilingualism and Montessori

Through a variety of consulting roles, I am working towards my goal of helping more Montessori schools become multilingual. I strongly believe that this is the future. In my little world, I am trying to make a polar switch in people's minds and help them understand the importance of multiculturalism. For us, having a space to share and express our gratitude is essential. We are always looking for what's next and how to continue growing and learning.

I am very encouraged that AMS is now offering more breakout sessions in Spanish at The Montessori Event each year. The Event had only one session a few years ago, and this year, these offerings were expanded to 11 sessions to meet the growing demand. However, we have the opportunity to continue to grow in this area. I strongly encourage presenters to submit proposals for sessions presented in Spanish. People are thankful for these spaces and sessions, and the demand for them remains high; one session I attended had over 100 participants!

Collective Action and the Future of AMS Affinity Spaces

I want to share my perspective on topics such as immigration, race and ethnicity, and issues facing LGBTQ+ communities. It's something that I strive to work on every day in my role as an instructor and consultant. I am genuinely concerned about the future of our country.

It's disheartening to hear politicians say things like "immigrants poisoned the blood of people" and referring to immigrants as animals. Such statements are hurtful and alarming, especially because children are listening. This is why the work of educators is more important now than ever.

Our spaces should be safe for everyone to express their fears and frustrations, and also to brainstorm solutions to these big social problems. It's not an easy task, but at least by talking and sharing our thoughts, we can support each other emotionally and work towards finding solutions together.

Estar en el escenario del Evento Montessori en Orlando en marzo de 2024 para hablar frente a miles de Montessorianos, en mi idioma, y referirme abiertamente a mí misma como mestiza es algo que nunca hubiera imaginado en mi vida. Después, recibí muchos comentarios de un grupo diverso de personas, incluídos afroamericanos, latinos, hombres, mujeres y blancos. Todos dijeron que mi mensaje era poderoso y mi historia hermosa. Compartir que le debía mucho a mi hija Gisela hizo que todo se sintiera muy especial.

La gente decía que era increíble ser reconocidos como su voz y que mi mensaje les dejó un impacto poderoso. Soy una persona humilde y no me considero sorprendente ni importante. Soy un ser humano que siempre ha acogido la diversidad. Inspirada por mujeres fuertes y solidarias

Fue surrealista estar en el escenario compartiendo mi historia y mi jornada con miles de personas de todo el mundo. Muchas mujeres me siguen inspirando, pero una que siempre está en mi corazón es Antonia Cobo, mi abuela por parte de mi madre. Ella era de un pueblo llamado Latacunga que está en las afueras de Quito, en mi país, Ecuador. Dijo que caminó desde Latacunga hasta Quito, lo que le llevó un par de días. Ese fue su viaje y encontró a mi abuelo, que también era una persona muy especial, y se conectaron y formaron una hermosa familia.

Mi abuela era humilde, dulce y siempre positiva. Podía reírse de sí misma a pesar de haber tenido una vida difícil. Su positividad y motivación eran contagiosas y siempre tenía una sonrisa en el rostro. Era la tercera hija de una madre soltera. Ella crió a mi madre y a otros hijos, asegurándose de que todos pudieran ir a la universidad a pesar de su pobreza. Mi abuela trabajó duro como vendedora en el mercado y luego abrió su propio supermercado, que creció hasta convertirse en varios supermercados. Su éxito es un testimonio de creer en uno mismo, trabajar duro y mantener una actitud positiva. Creo que estas son las lecciones más importantes que aprendí de ella.

La sesión de networking del espacio de afinidad del evento Montessori

El día de la Sesión de Networking de AMS en Español Affinity Space en The Montessori Event 2024 fue muy alegre. Todos estaban felices de conectarse en persona. Aproximadamente 50 personas asistieron a la sesión y comenzamos a compartir nuestras historias y vivencias.

Siempre hay recién llegados al Grupo de Afinidad de AMS en Español estos días, por lo que es importante compartir por qué creamos un espacio para latinos y cualquier otra persona que quiera adoptar el idioma español en el movimiento Montessori con AMS. Fue un sueño que comenzó hace 14 años y, cuando se hizo realidad, motivó a las personas a ser escuchadas y vistas de una manera que nunca antes había sucedido.

Es una conexión especial cuando hablas con alguien en su idioma nativo. Cuando me hablas en español, mi corazón se ilumina y es una conexión diferente a la que tengo con los demás. Hablamos de cómo podemos seguir compartiendo este espacio, la importancia de realizar desarrollo profesional y cómo invitamos a los miembros a compartir sus experiencias cada mes. Tenemos personas que hablan de la importancia de la educación bilingüe en general, no sólo de la educación Montessori.

Espero que AMS pueda ayudar a crear e inspirar más programas de certificación Montessori bilingües en español. La demanda es alta y he recibido innumerables correos electrónicos pidiendo información sobre dónde encontrar programas de certificación en español. Muchas escuelas se han acercado a mí en busca de ayuda para implementar un programa bilingüe Montessori. Sin más de estos programas, seguirá habiendo escasez de guías y asistentes Montessori bilingües español-inglés certificados, y los niños de todo el país seguirán privados de la gloriosa oportunidad de recibir una educación Montessori bilingüe.

Multilingüismo y Montessori

A través de una variedad de funciones como consultora, estoy trabajando para lograr mi objetivo de ayudar a que más escuelas Montessori se vuelvan multilingües. Creo firmemente que este es el futuro. En mi pequeño mundo, estoy tratando de hacer un cambio positivo en la mente de las personas y ayudarlas a comprender la importancia del multiculturalismo. Para nosotros tener un espacio para compartir y expresar nuestro agradecimiento es fundamental. Siempre estamos buscando qué sigue y cómo seguir creciendo y aprendiendo.

Me alienta mucho que AMS ahora ofrezca más sesiones en español en The Montessori Event cada año. El evento tuvo sólo una sesión hace unos años y este año, estas presentaciones se ampliaron a 11 sesiones para satisfacer la creciente demanda. Sin embargo, tenemos la oportunidad de seguir creciendo en este ámbito. Recomiendo encarecidamente a los presentadores que envíen propuestas para sesiones presentadas en español. La gente está agradecida por estos espacios y sesiones, y la demanda de ellos sigue siendo alta; ¡Una sesión a la que asistí tuvo más de 100 participantes!

Acción colectiva y el futuro de los espacios de afinidad de AMS

Quiero compartir mi perspectiva sobre temas como la inmigración, la raza y el origen étnico, y los problemas que enfrentan las comunidades LGBTQ+. Es algo en lo que me esfuerzo por trabajar todos los días en mi rol de instructora y consultora. Estoy genuinamente preocupada por el futuro de nuestro país.

Es desalentador escuchar a los políticos decir cosas como "los inmigrantes envenenan la sangre de la gente" y referirse a los inmigrantes como animales. Este tipo de declaraciones son hirientes y alarmantes, especialmente porque los niños están escuchando. Por eso el trabajo de los educadores es ahora más importante que nunca.

Nuestros espacios deben ser seguros para que todos expresen sus miedos y frustraciones, y también para pensar en soluciones a estos grandes problemas sociales. No es una tarea fácil, pero al menos hablando y compartiendo nuestros pensamientos, podemos apoyarnos emocionalmente y trabajar juntos para encontrar soluciones.
