History of the American Montessori Society
In 2025, the American Montessori Society celebrates 65 years of advancing Montessori education in the U.S. This extraordinary movement started in 1960 as an initiative to revitalize Montessori education in the U.S. by offering an alternative to traditional methods and meeting the demand for innovative educational options.
Among those seeking change was Nancy McCormick Rambusch, a charismatic New York City teacher with a master’s in early childhood education. Passionate about children’s development, she became a tireless advocate for Dr. Montessori’s vision, helping to bring the movement to life in America.
