Montessori Education Week is an opportunity for Montessori communities worldwide to celebrate the heart of Montessori education: its philosophy, carefully prepared environments, and profound respect for the developing child. Throughout the week, schools are encouraged to highlight the joy and purpose of children’s work, strengthen family understanding of Montessori principles, and honor the guides and staff who prepare the conditions for growth each day.

When schools across states and countries celebrate during the same week, it creates a powerful collective energy. It amplifies our shared message, raises visibility for Montessori education, and reminds us that we are part of a global movement working toward the same mission: cultivating confident, compassionate, and capable learners.

Rather than a single program or event, Montessori Education Week is designed to be flexible and inclusive. It presents an opportunity for our community to participate in meaningful, hands-on, and joyful ways. We invite you to explore the ideas below by selecting the initiatives that best align with your interests, availability, and passions.

Students may reflect through journals, artwork, storytelling, or skits, sharing what Montessori means to them in their own words and voices.

In classrooms, children might lead tours, demonstrate their favorite materials, or create displays to explain what they are learning. Older students can design timelines, dramatize Montessori concepts, or create projects honoring Dr. Montessori’s life and work. School-wide activities could include peace gardens, kindness projects, service initiatives, or connections with Montessori classrooms around the world.

Montessori Education Week offers families a chance to step into the learning environment to explore and experience Montessori materials alongside their children through observation visits, student-led tours, open houses, and hands-on learning stations that highlight concentration, independence, and collaboration in action.

We also encourage participation in short workshops or talks on Montessori philosophy, fostering independence at home, and Grace & Courtesy. For those who enjoy service and connection, family service projects, reflection activities, book fairs, or shared displays celebrating Dr. Montessori offer additional ways to engage.

Montessori Education Week is a wonderful chance to share our approach with the wider community. This may include community open houses, talks or panels, media features, social media storytelling, or collaborations with local libraries, museums, and cultural centers. Student work exhibitions in public spaces, peace and kindness campaigns, and community service projects allow Montessori values to shine far beyond the classroom.

Share the Story Within Our Community

We encourage everyone to share moments from the week on social media and community platforms, including photos of student work, quotes, reflections, and celebrations. We’ve also created downloadable graphics so you can share them with your community!

Montessori Education Week is not only a time to celebrate within our school, but also a powerful opportunity to elevate Montessori education in the wider community through storytelling, advocacy, and public engagement.

One impactful way to support Montessori Education Week is by helping secure a formal proclamation from your Governor, Mayor, or other civic leaders recognizing Montessori Education Week. A proclamation honors Dr. Maria Montessori’s legacy, highlights the value of child-centered learning, and ensures that schools, families, and communities can celebrate and advocate for Montessori education statewide. It provides:

  • Formal Recognition: A Governor’s or world leader’s proclamation officially acknowledges Montessori education, lending visibility and legitimacy to the pedagogy.
  • Community Awareness: Public recognition raises awareness of Montessori principles and their impact on child development.
  • Advocacy & Support: It strengthens support for Montessori programs in public policy, funding, and community initiatives.
  • Celebration & Motivation: It inspires schools, families, and children to celebrate Montessori values and connect to the global movement.

You can help by:

  • Researching whether Montessori Education Week is already recognized in your city or state. If not, find the proclamation request process instructions.
  • Preparing and submitting a request. Most requests must be submitted 6–26 weeks in advance. Provide supporting materials like FAQs, local impact, and planned activities.
  • Following up to confirm receipt and track progress
  • Announcing the proclamation (once approved) through newsletters, social media, and school events.

The growing list of communities with official recognition already includes Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nashville (TN), New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, South Carolina, Tampa (FL), Washington State, and the City of Toronto (Canada).

Another powerful way to amplify Montessori Education Week is by sharing your story through local media. Writing a press release for TV, radio, or print helps reach a broad audience quickly, raises awareness, highlights student achievements, and celebrates recognitions. To distribute a press release:

  • Identify media contacts. Include:
    • Local newspapers, magazines, and online news outlets.
    • Education-focused publications or blogs
    • Community newsletters
  • Draft the Release. Use a clear format. Keep the text concise and engaging.
  • Send the Release. Use standard email (text or PDF attachment).
  • Follow Up. Call or email a few days later to confirm receipt and answer questions.
  • Share Digitally. Post the release on your school website, social media, and newsletters.
