Joanne Hammes

July 24, 2017. Joanne P. Hammes, 85, of Farmington, NM, passed away Tuesday, June 20, 2017, in Spokane, WA.

Born June 6, 1932, in Parker's Prairie, MN, Joanne made a difference in people's lives wherever she went, contributing to the community through her professional work as a Roman Catholic nun, and later as an educator (as well as home healthcare giver, nanny, dog sitter, storyteller, and more!).

In honor of Joanne’s lifetime of work as an advocate for children’s education, in 2013 an anonymous donor established the American Montessori Society Joanne P. Hammes Scholarship. The scholarship, typically one per year, goes to a qualified individual who is pursuing training as a Montessori teacher in an AMS-affiliated teacher education program.

Joanne was also an advocate for civil rights, senior citizens, the environment, and animal rights. She represented Northwest New Mexico Seniors, Inc., on New Mexico's Non-Metro Agency on Aging Advisory Board; she became a Master Gardener with New Mexico State University’s Cooperative Extension Service (2016); and she enjoyed all animals, assisting in Farmington's Cinco de Mayo Chihuahua races (2016, 2017).

A consummate reader, student, and educator, Joanne took college classes well into her 80s, serving as a role model for others and always striving to improve herself and the world.

Joanne is survived by 3 children, Eugenio, Sonya, and Tanya Trejo; and 2 grandchildren, Alexandra and Maximillian. She was predeceased by the artist, Ruben Trejo, with whom she had a longstanding relationship.

Joanne’s indomitable spirit left a mark wherever she happened to be. Her many talents and encyclopedic knowledge resulted in a rare Renaissance woman of the modern age. This, and her generous spirit and a dry sense of humor, endeared her to many. She will be greatly missed.

A memorial service for is being planned for the fall. E-mail if you would like to have details sent to you directly.
