April 28, 2015 — We at the American Montessori Society extend our deepest sympathies to those affected by the devastating earthquake that took place in Nepal this past Saturday, April 25, 2015.

According to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), it is being called the worst disaster to hit the country since a 1934 earthquake that led to more than 10,000 fatalities. Popular news sources report that 8 million people have been affected by this weekend’s tragedy, including nearly 4,400 who were killed and 1.4 million in need of food assistance.

Below is a short list of some of the many organizations that are helping with relief and rescue efforts, which we are providing as a reference point for those who are considering making a donation. While the list does not reflect any particular advocacy on the part of AMS, we note that all received either a 3- or 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, a resource for evaluating the work of nonprofits (as reported by Public Radio International):

Catholic Relief Services

Direct Relief

International Relief Teams

Operation USA

Save the Children

Seva Foundation

World Help

Additional organizations of note:

Doctors Without Borders
