“Children learn by doing; adults learn by reflecting on what they’ve done,” is something presenter Pam Dunbar has heard frequently as a professional development specialist for a large urban school district, and an idea she will use to inspire curiosity and thought during her webinar.

The program will start with an investigation of the why of professional development. Next will come an examination of what we know about the adult learner and best practices of professional development. From there, Pam will address the how of professional development options, assessing needs, creating plans, and measuring effectiveness.

Topics to be explored include:

  • Characteristics and needs of adult learners
  • Best practices of adult learning: what does research tell us?
  • Continuum of professional development options: group to personalized; knowledge to skill-based; book studies to action research to instructional coaching
  • Assessing needs using tools of observation, self-reflection, and goals
  • How do goals figure in?
  • Creating professional development plans: whole school, program level, individual
  • Determining effectiveness of professional development (qualitatively, quantitatively)

You will come away with:

  • Information on best practices of professional development for adult learners that are research-based and aligned with Montessori practices and principles
  • A professional development planning tool/process that can be used with individuals, programs, and school-wide initiatives.
  • Resources for additional reading, links to relevant videos, a “menu” of professional development options, and implementation guides for several specific options, ranging from a book study to instructional coaching programs
