Film Screening & Discussion: Resilience: The Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope

Thursday, March 22 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM

Presenter: Elaine Blasi

Target Audience: All

Researchers have recently discovered a dangerous biological syndrome caused by abuse and neglect during childhood. Advertise childhood experiences such as physical, sexual, and emotional abuse can trigger hormones that wreak havoc on the brains and bodies of children, putting them at a greater risk for destructive behavior and medical diseases later in life. While the broader impacts of poverty worsen the risk, no segment of society is immune. Resilience , a 1-hour documentary featuring trailblazers in pediatrics, education, and social welfare, explores these issues—and chronicles the dawn of a movement that is determined to fight back with approaches designed to protect children from the insidious effects of toxic stress and the dark legacy of a childhood that no child would choose.

Following the film, there will be a panel discussion about issues and strategies raised in it and implications they hold for Montessori practices. The discussion will be facilitated by Elaine Blasi, head of Silver Oak High School, a public charter Montessori school in Hayward, CA. Panelists are a select group of Montessori educators and other experts who will draw from their research and experiences working with children who have suffered from toxic stress: Sara Knickerbocker, Linda Jacobson, and Kathy Winterman.

Resilience was an official selection of the 2016 Sundance Film Festival as well as the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Seattle International Film Festival, Cleveland International Film Festival, and more.

Panelists: Linda Jacobson, Dr. Sara Knickerbocker, and Dr. Kathy Winterman
