JANUARY 21, 2020

Dear AMS Community,

On behalf of the AMS Board of Directors, I am writing to let you know that Dr. Timothy J. Purnell, who came on board as AMS CEO in 2017, has decided to resign from AMS to pursue other opportunities. I know you join me in thanking Tim for his contributions and his service to our organization and its important mission. The Board appreciates the thought and care that has gone into creating AMS’s strategic initiatives and forward-thinking projects, and the work will continue unabated.

We are pleased that Richard A. Ungerer, whom many of you know from his service as Executive Director of AMS from 2005 – 2017, has agreed to serve as Interim Executive Director, effective February 1, while the Board conducts a search for a permanent Executive Director. The Board has established a search committee and will engage a well-respected search firm to help us with this process.

The Board has partnered with the AMS staff to continue to support the organization’s mission, vision, values, and strategic initiatives. Our AMS staff is dedicated to supporting and caring for our members through the services you have come to expect, and this excellent work will continue.

We look forward to seeing many of you at the upcoming Montessori Event in Dallas, where we will come together to celebrate Maria Montessori’s 150th birthday anniversary; to honor her important, innovative work; and to acknowledge the progress being made each day in our schools on behalf of our children.  The Montessori Event is our collective opportunity to reconnect and further this stupendous work.

We have much history to treasure and much to look forward to in the future.

Thank you.

Munir Shivji, AMS President
