AMS 2019 Board Elections
Dates, voting rules, and more.
The Board of Directors is the policy-making body of the American Montessori Society. It is empowered to formulate policies and to amend the bylaws as needed to fulfill its fiduciary responsibilities and to ensure a vigorous future for the organization. New directors are elected annually by AMS membership, helping to ensure that their voice is heard in the governance of our organization.
Early voting for our 2019 elections will open March 22, 2019. Regular voting opens March 29, 2019. Voting closes April 12, 2019 (4:00 PM Eastern Time). New board directors will take office in July 2019.
All voting is done online. Attendees of The Montessori Event in Washington, DC, will have the opportunity to vote onsite, March 22 – 24.
All AMS members may vote in board elections. Upon the opening of registration on March 22:
Individuals: To vote, log in to the AMS website using your email address and password.
Heads of schools: To cast your individual vote or school vote, log in using your individual email address and password.
Directors of teacher education programs: To cast your individual vote or teacher education program vote, log in using your individual email address and password.

Election of the Board-Nominated Slate
Individual members: Every current individual member (teacher, head of school, teacher educator, adult learner, and general member) has 1 vote (to either Approve or Not Approve) the Board-Nominated Slate.
Organizational members: Every Accredited, Full, Associate, Initiate, and International member school, and every AMS-Affiliated TEP, has 1 vote (to either Approve or Not Approve) the Board-Nominated Slate on behalf of the entire organization, including satellites and/or additional levels/locations.
Election of Professional Directors
Individual members: Every current individual member (teacher, head of school, teacher educator, adult learner, and general member) has 1 vote.
Schools in the U.S.: Every Accredited, Full, and Associate member school receives 1 vote per every 100 students enrolled, or portion thereof. Every Initiate member school has 1 vote. Satellites of Accredited, Full, Associate, and Initiate member schools do not vote directly. Votes allocated to Satellites are added to the main site vote and the main site school casts all votes. Schools with multiple votes may cast all their votes for 1 candidate, or distribute their votes over multiple candidates.
Schools outside the U.S.: Every Accredited, Full, Associate, and Initiate school member gets 1 vote. Satellite locations, if any, do not vote and no additional votes are allotted to main schools based on their satellite locations.
Teacher education programs: Every AMS-Affiliated TEP has 1 vote per AMS-affiliated level for the following levels: Infant & Toddler, Early Childhood, Elementary, Secondary, and Administrator. TEPs with multiple votes may cast all their votes for 1 candidate, or distribute their votes over multiple candidates.
Election of the Chair of the Heads of School Section
Voting for the Heads of Schools Section Chair is open to each AMS member who is currently head of any AMS member school (whether Accredited, Full, Associate, Satellite, or Initiate). Each eligible head of school may cast one (1) vote.
Election of the Chair of the Teachers Section
Voting for the Teachers Section Chair is open to each AMS member and either teaches at a member school or has identified themselves as a teacher with us. Each eligible individual may cast one (1) vote.
