September 15, 2014 — Musya Meyer (b. 1924), founder of Hudson Country Montessori School in New Rochelle, NY, and Danbury, CT, and a leader in the Montessori world, died peacefully after a short illness on Friday, September 12, 2014, at the age of 90.  She was surrounded by her family.

Still working full-time until the time of her death, Musya was a longtime member of the AMS Archives Committee and a former member of the American Montessori Society Board of Directors. In the 1970s, she served as director of the St. Nicholas Training Center for the Montessori Method of Education. With Tim Seldin, she co-authored Celebrations of Life—the Montessori Approach.

Musya embraced the Montessori philosophy to establish a framework of teaching and learning in which intellectual and social discipline work together. She wrote that her aim was “to strengthen the bond of Montessori schools around the world for the benefit of all our children and a peaceful world.”

Of the founding of HCMS, Muysa said that her vision was to create a “school infused with a joy for learning” dedicated to the education of the whole child.

Musya is predeceased by her beloved husband, Ortwin August Meyer, and daughter, Lynne Campbell. She leaves her memories to be cherished by her son, Mark Meyer, current head of HCMS; daughter-in-law, Megin Meyer; grandchildren Nicholas and Katherine; and all others whose lives she has touched, including a wide circle of colleagues and friends in the American Montessori Society.

Her funeral service will be held Saturday, September 20, at 11a.m., at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 4 Fountain Square, Larchmont, NY, 10538. Calling hours are Tuesday, September 16, 2 – 5 pm and 7 – 9 pm, and Wednesday September 17, 6 – 8 p.m., at Fox Funeral Home, 2080 Boston Post Road, Larchmont, NY, 10538.
