August 31, 2012. Take a look at the Google homepage—and see how that Internet giant is celebrating the birthday of Dr. Maria Montessori today, August 31! Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page have been outspoken in crediting the role their Montessori education has had on their success.

We join Larry and Sergey and the rest of the world in paying tribute to Maria on this day!

Maria Montessori was a physician, educator, feminist, and peace activist. In the 105 years since the opening of the first Casa dei Bambini in 1907, millions of children worldwide have been supported in their quest to “help me to do it alone!”—and to become the responsible, respectful, curious, and caring citizens of the future.

If Dr. Montessori were at a birthday celebration in any one of the many thousands of schools that bear her legacy, she would be circling a “sun” 82 times—once for each year of her life, 1870 – 1952. With each circumnavigation, we would have yet another remarkable achievement of hers to herald—including a breathtaking 3 nominations for a Nobel Peace Prize.

The groundbreaking principles developed by Dr. Montessori are the ones that still inspire our work today. It is our honor and privilege to be walking in her footsteps alongside you, the passionate and dedicated members of the Montessori community.
