Catherine Maresca, a member of the AMS Public Policy Committee, attends the monthly meetings of the Council for American Private Education. Located in Washington, DC, CAPE is a coalition of national organizations and state affiliates serving private elementary and secondary schools. Catherine filed this report with us:

CAPE met on December, 17, 2012. As always, we reviewed the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). CAPE's issue paper is ready for the next round of discussions. Two meetings with staff from the Department of Education were attended by members of CAPE Monthly Meeting Groups. We are waiting to schedule meetings with members of education committees of Congress as soon as they are announced.

The Coalition for Charitable Giving is lobbying hard these days as the deduction for charitable contributions is considered as part of the solution to avoid the "fiscal cliff.” Coalition members had 200 meetings on the Hill during their lobbying days early in December. Most representatives listened, but are awaiting direction from Congressional leadership on this issue.

We discussed the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, deciding that an expression of sympathy and prayer would be appropriate, but no policy action will be taken by CAPE at this point.
