A message from the president of the AMS Board of Directors, Kathy Roemer, EdD.

December 17, 2012

We are still reeling in the aftershock of the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends who were directly and indirectly affected by the events.

I was representing AMS at the Montessori in Asia Conference in Singapore when I learned of the news. I waited until I returned to the United States before watching any news. My tears were flowing as I listened to President Obama express our nation’s deep sympathy to the community.

After an act of violence at a school, all parents will be looking to their school leaders to offer assurance that it cannot happen in our schools. If you are a head of school or on the school’s emergency response team, you are probably doing what I am doing today— reviewing policies and procedures for intruders and emergencies with teachers, administrators, and parents.

We hope that our students have not been watching the ongoing reporting on television. Parents will be seeking comfort from you regarding school security and teacher responsibilities. If your school has counselors available, you may be able to offer parents and teachers additional time if necessary. The resources below may help you and your community as you process this tragedy.
