In this call to action, Chandra Fernando, our 2012 Living Legacy, addresses a dire humanitarian crisis—and asks for your support.

In the Horn of Africa, more than half a million children are on the brink of starvation. Within the last 3 months, before the UN declared a famine in Somalia, well over 25,000 children perished of starvation and disease. To me, this is unthinkable!

As a result of the worst drought in 20 years and an unstable political situation, thousands of families have fled Somalia to the borders of neighboring Ethiopia and Kenya. Among the most vulnerable are 2 million children.

Relief organizations are calling on all of us for help. The earlier we act, the more children we can save. As Bono says, “This will define who we are—this is a defining moment for us.”

As Montessorians dedicated to the well being of children, let’s band together and save these children. Let’s mobilize our Montessori community through schools, teacher education programs, teachers, parents, and children to save a future generation.

“Within the child lies the fate of the future.” — Maria Montessori
