Peace & Social Justice

Message of PeaceThe American Montessori Society is a strong proponent of peace education, and supports it through project grants, an e-newsletter, and networking events.

The inspiration for this support may be best expressed by Peace Committee Chair Sonnie McFarland, who is also the AMS 2011 Living Legacy, an honor reserved for those whose dedication and leadership have made a lasting impact on the AMS community:

"There can be no peace without social justice, and there can be no social justice without peace. Which is it? They are both intimately connected and mutually necessary for the other to exist. If we focus exclusively on creating social justice and ignore the principles of peace, such as understanding and patience, we create further injustice through our potentially insensitive actions. On the other hand, if we focus on peace exclusively and ignore inequality and injustice around us, it is impossible to realize a peaceful community.

"Maria Montessori created a balanced philosophy and practice that keeps alive the natural compassionate and peaceful spirit within each child. She challenges us by saying, 'Not in the service of any political or social creed should the teacher work, but in the service of the complete human being, able to exercise in freedom a self-discipline, will and judgment, unperverted by prejudice and undistorted by fear.'" Declaration of Peace & Social Justice

At AMS’s Third Annual Global Forum, held in New Orleans in March, 2009, participants drafted a statement to capture their shared goals for peace and social justice. The aspirations expressed in this declaration continue to resonate with the promise of universal peace.
