The American Montessori Society focused on the future at our 2011 Annual Conference held March 24 – 27 in Chicago, IL, at the Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile.

The theme for the conference was “A Timeless Promise for Our Changing World.”

As our world harnesses the power of technology, we must recharge our commitment to preparing students for the challenges of a global society. We must also embrace the promise of a world in which education is available to all who seek it.

The ways in which individuals access data are increasing exponentially during this Information Age. Best practices and the multitude of new ways our children can absorb information need to be examined.

When education fails, cries for increased uniformity and standards become louder. Where does the Montessori Method, which encourages individual growth and personal development, fit into the current educational system?

At the AMS 2011 Annual Conference, we explored ways in which Montessori education can harness the ever-growing powers of technology and use it to work toward transforming lives and advancing the world toward a better future.

With over 100 years of successful Montessori education in our collective history, and current research corroborating Maria Montessori’s work, we took the opportunity to reflect on her statement, “The child is both hope and a promise for mankind.”
