Webinars hosted by the American Montessori Society are an economical way to bring real-time, interactive learning experiences right into your office, classroom, or home. Presented by Montessori educators and other experts in related fields, our webinars are a convenient and efficient way to earn 1.5 clock hours that qualify for the AMS professional development requirement.

Many of our webinars are also available for rental as webcasts, allowing you to fit professional development into your schedule at the time that works best for you.

Unless otherwise noted, the prices for webinars are:

Individuals (1 participant at 1 computer)
$45 AMS member
$65 general public 

Organizations (unlimited participants at 1 computer)
$175 AMS member school or affiliated teacher education program
$225 non-member school, unaffiliated program, or other nonmember organization

If you register for a webinar and then cancel, we will credit your payment toward another Webinar of your choice.

“Divide & Conquer! A Math Refresher for Teachers of Elementary Students”

Have your students conquered division or is division conquering them? This workshop will refresh your understanding of the links between concrete and abstract division of wholes, fractions, and decimals, offering precise language that more deeply connects children (and parents) with materials, leading them naturally toward abstraction without teaching processes abstractly.

Betsy Lockhart is the Elementary coordinator and an instructor at the Montessori Education Center of the Rockies in Evergreen, CO. She has been an Elementary teacher at Montessori School of Lakewood and Montessori School of Evergreen, both in CO, and a science instructor at the Institute for Advanced Montessori Studies in Silver Spring, MD. Join us for a look at the joys and challenges of developing a Montessori community for babies and young toddlers from birth through 23 months of age and one of their parents or caregivers. Topics to be addressed include the needs of the adult, environmental design, snack, adult education, songs, materials, community building, economics, database development, staffing, budgeting, and the impacts on enrollment.

“To Cultivate Peace in Your Classroom—Call Upon the Children!”

This child must therefore be our central focus when we seek ways to peace. Why do we not call upon the children?" - Maria Montessori 

Maria Montessori believed that children have a natural capacity for peace. Learn how to cultivate this vital force through a process called “The Children’s Fire,” resulting in a classroom in which children’s abilities as peace builders, peacemakers, and peacekeepers are brought to the table, resulting in a sustainable culture of harmony in your classroom. You will also come away with a wealth of ideas for infusing peace education into all curriculum subjects.

Rebecca Janke, MEd, is a peace education consultant and trainer, and co-founder and executive director of Growing Communities for Peace. She is also president of the Minnesota Alliance of Peacemakers, which represents 77 peace and justice organizations; a co-founder of the Human Rights and Peace Store; and an adjunct professor at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. She helped implement the Montessori magnet program in the Minneapolis, St. Paul and Forest Lake, MN, public schools, and founded and directed a private Montessori school in Hudson, Wisconsin. Rebecca is author of Peacemaker's A,B,Cs: A Conflict Resolution Guide for Young Children Using the Peace Table, which is now used in over 6,000 locations worldwide; and co-author of Compassionate Rebel: Energized by Anger, Motivated by Love. In 2009, Rebecca received the Outstanding World Citizenship Award at the Annual Nobel Peace Prize Festival held at Augsburg College.

“Linking Inputs & Outputs: Authentic Assessment for Authentic Montessori in the Public Sector”

Some of the most significant challenges faced by all public schools—Montessori and other—revolve around assessment.  How do we demonstrate what our students know and can do? For Montessorians, this challenge is often made more acute by a testing regime that does not take into account the personalized and cumulative nature of learning in fully implemented Montessori schools. This session will present a framework for addressing this challenge. Drawing from preliminary results of the “What, Why, & How” research project, an investigation of the methods and outcomes of Montessori education in the United States, Jackie Cossentino and Keith Whitescarver will share an approach to documenting student outcomes and linking those outcomes to the unique nature of Montessori teaching and learning. They will reveal newly developed assessment tools and outcome measures that assist schools and teachers in “measuring what matters” in Montessori classrooms and schools. Together, these innovative measures offer potentially promising new ways to effectively document the deep learning that occurs in Montessori learning environments.

Keith Whitescarver, EdD, is director of the National Center for Montessori in the Public Sector and a member of the AMS Archives Committee. His research on the history of the Montessori movement has appeared in Teachers College Record, Montessori Life, Montessori International, and other outlets.

Jacqueline Cossentino, EdD, is senior associate and director of research at the National Center for Montessori in the Public Sector. Her work revolves around advancing fully implemented Montessori education in the public sector, and her research focuses on the development of expertise within Montessori educational culture.

“Water Activities Beyond Float & Sink”

What do your students know about evaporation, absorption, saturation, precipitation, and pollution? This webinar will give you a wealth of ideas for step-by-step lessons that include experiments and other activities that will pique their curiosity about the many properties of water—and set them on the road to exploration and discovery. Along the way, they will also develop an appreciation for water as a fragile resource. You’ll also come away with a list of recommended reading to help further your knowledge (and theirs), relevant websites, and suggestions for materials that can support water work both inside and outside your classroom—many of which can be found right at home.

Marie Conti, MEd, is head of school at The Wetherill School in Gladwyne, PA, and the former AMS senior director of school accreditation & member programs. She has 35 years of experience in Montessori, wearing many hats: teacher, teacher educator, teacher education program director, school administrator, and regional group leader. In 2009, she was honored with the Montessori Teachers Association of Pennsylvania's Award of Excellence. AMS-credentialed (Early Childhood).
