Overview

Cosmic education—the story of the continuing evolution of the universe—is a keystone of the Montessori Elementary classroom. It reveals connections between such subjects as history, geography, and the sciences, and gives students the opportunity to understand and appreciate their roots, roles, and responsibilities as part of a larger community, as well as a sense of interdependence and the gratitude that comes from that awareness. This webinar will help you take a new look at your existing Elementary I Cosmic curriculum and provide you with helpful and creative ideas for adding depth and breadth to it through the use of well-planned, well-designed, and well-executed extensions.

You will come away with detailed descriptions of Cosmic extensions that the presenter has used with great success in the classroom—and will spark interest and excitement in yours. For example:

  • A 3-dimensional mural based on the Timeline of Life, complete with crawling amphibians, a flying pterosaur, oceans, erupting volcanoes, and more
  • Chinese paper cuttings that can be used to create and decorate the entranceway to a home in celebration of the Chinese New Year
  • A hand-sewn, historically accurate suit of clothing based on naturalist and preservation advocate John Muir, as an extension to studies of conservation and the environment

You will also be given:

  • A format for introducing and fostering community discussion about Cosmic extensions in your classroom
  • Examples of student-driven Cosmic extensions and how they were organized and implemented
  • Ideas about how to optimize your classroom environment for following your students through their Cosmic extensions work

Whether you are a novice teacher or a veteran educator, the ideas for extending your Cosmic curriculum that will be offered in this webinar will help to further your students’ sense of importance, purpose, and responsibility in their family and school communities as well as in the world beyond.
