Keynote Address: Angeline Lillard

“Montessori Research and Challenges, and a Few Notes on Teacher Education”
In this address, Dr. Lillard will review her research on Montessori education, including outcomes and variations in practice. She will also present some perceived challenges to Montessori education, such as issues of cultural adaptation and incommensurability across conventional and Montessori worlds. In conclusion, she will share suggestions on how to best assist adult learners in the process of Montessori enculturation.

Angeline Lillard, PhD, is professor of psychology at the University of Virginia and the author of the much acclaimed book, Montessori: The Science Behind the Genius, for which she received a Cognitive Development Society Book Award. An updated edition (2017) features 2 new chapters, including one on research.

Angeline is also an elected Fellow of both the American Psychological Association and the Association for Psychological Science. She has published over 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals, including Science and Pediatrics. Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and many private foundations. She is a recipient of a James McKeen Cattell sabbatical award, as well as the Developmental Psychology Division of the American Psychological Association's Outstanding Dissertation Award and its Boyd McCandless Award for Distinguished Early Career Contribution.

Dr. Lillard received her doctorate in psychology from Stanford University, and has delivered keynote addresses for over 20 Montessori conferences worldwide.

Dr. Angeline Lillard will be presenting a workshop on “Where Is the Evidence? Results from 2 New Longitudinal Studies of Montessori Efficacy” at the AMS Annual Conference, Saturday, March 24, Session 3, 8:00 AM – 9:15 AM.

Immediately after her workshop, Angeline will sign copies of her book, Montessori: The Science Behind the Genius. The book will be on sale during the conference in the AMS Bookstore.
