June 14, 2016. As we stand witness to the largest mass shooting in United States history, which has reportedly claimed the lives of at least 50 people, including many from the LGBTQ community, as well as the gunman himself, we express horror, grief, and profound sadness. Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of those who were killed while enjoying a night out with their friends on Sunday, June 12, in Orlando, Florida; and our prayers go to those who were wounded—some, grievously so.
Maria Montessori pursued her ideals in turbulent times. Living through war and political upheaval inspired her to add peace education to the Montessori curriculum. More than a century after she founded her first school, we continue to teach peace in our classrooms but still do not have the answer for how to put an end, now and forever, to atrocious crimes, such as the one in Orlando, that claim the lives of innocent people.
With fervent hopes for a brighter future,
