May 16, 2016. Madeleine J. Justus, the founder (in 1951) of Washington’s Montessori Academy at Spring Valley and Montessori Institute for Teacher Education at Spring Valley, passed away in her sleep on Tuesday night, May 3, 2016. She was nearly 100 years old.
Born in 1916 in Central Europe, in 1937 Ms. Justus attended a symposium on “Children in an Impending War” at the League of Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. Maria Montessori was there as well. Ms. Justus later wrote about the experience of meeting Dr. Montessori, dubbing her “the most eloquent speaker” at the event.
Ms. Justus dedicated a lifetime of work to the Montessori Movement. You can read more of her words on the Montessori Academy at Spring Valley website.
We express our deepest condolences to Ms. Justus’s family, friends, and wide circle of Montessori colleagues; and remember, with fondness, celebrating Ms. Justus at a dedicated luncheon during the AMS 2007 Fall Conference in Southern California.
Ms. Justus’s legacy will continue with the young generation of teachers learning from those who learned from her.
