October 25, 2012. At its summer 2012 meeting, the AMS Board of Directors voted to approve the requirement that effective July 1, 2020, heads of AMS-accredited and full member schools hold a bachelor’s degree (or higher). In addition the head of school must either:
- Hold a Montessori credential and score a requisite number of points (for professional development and related work experience) as detailed on the Head of School Requirements Verification Form. The Montessori credential can be from any Montessori teacher education program (with the exception of non-MACTE distance learning programs), whether or not it is AMS-affiliated. It can be either an administrator credential or a teacher credential.
- Score a requisite number of points (higher than the above) for professional development and related work experience, as detailed in the AMS Head of School Portfolio Variance Form.
The head of school verification system described above parallels that already in place for teachers in AMS-accredited schools.
For review purposes only, we invite you to take a look at the Head of School Requirements Verification Form and the Head of School Portfolio Variance Form. You will submit your actual form when you apply for AMS accreditation or full school membership.
We will share more information about the requirement as it becomes available.
