We are deeply saddened to share the news that Karen Sue Olson, a leading light of Colorado’s Montessori community and beyond, died May 3, 2011, at the age of 64.
Karen was born in 1946, in Houston, TX, and moved as an infant to Boulder, CO. There she developed her lifelong love of horses, river rafting, and hiking through the Rocky Mountains. In 1968 she earned a BA in German and Sociology from the University of Colorado, followed by a Pre-Primary diploma from St. Nicholas Montessori Center.
Karen was administrator of Boulder Montessori School (AMS-accredited) from 1977 until her death. She also participated in the founding of Montessori Education Center of the Rockies (MECR) in 1978, and served on the MECR Board as treasurer for over 25 years. Karen played a key role in the development of the Toddler program at Boulder Montessori School and was an instructor for the MECR Infant and Toddler course, teaching Parent Leadership and Administration, as well as serving as field consultant and mentor to numerous students. She gave generously of her time in sharing her wealth of knowledge and experience with new and existing schools, and will be keenly missed by the entire Montessori community.
Karen leaves behind her cherished sons Jafar and Farid, countless devoted family and friends, and the many students and teachers whose time at Boulder Montessori School was enriched by Karen’s leadership and love.
Contributions in Karen’s memory may be made to the Colorado Horse Rescue, 10386 North 65th Street, Longmont, CO 80503.
