It is with profound sadness that we share the news that Gail Supanich, an active member of the AMS and larger Montessori communities, died March 17, 2011, at the age of 60. Gail lived her final days the same way she lived her entire life, surrounded by family and friends.

Gail was born May 24, 1950, in Detroit, MI, daughter of John and Edith Supanich. She was predeceased by her father, John Supanich, and is survived by her mother, Edith; her husband, Richard Greenberg; 6 children and their spouses; as well several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, additional family, and countless friends.

Gail graduated from the University of Michigan with a BA in Education. In 1973, following her completion of the Montessori Teacher Training Program, she moved to Massachusetts to work at Pioneer Valley Montessori School (PVMS). She concluded her Montessori teacher education in all programs that Montessori had to offer, and taught students at all levels during her tenure at PVMS. Additionally, Gail earned a master’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Westfield State University.

For 30 years, Gail was PVMS director (head of school); all of her children are PVMS alumni. She subsequently worked in the Springfield, MA, public schools’ Montessori program as a mentor to newly-educated teachers; and as a teacher educator for various New England education programs.

A frequent conference presenter and consultant, both locally and nationally, Gail served as a member of the Montessori Schools of Massachusetts Board of Directors for over 20 years. For 5 years she served AMS as commissioner on the AMS School Accreditation Commission.

Gail was a teacher, a mother, a wife, and a friend to all, whose life was an inspiration to all she touched. She will be forever missed, fondly remembered, and always loved.

A private memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 1, 2011.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the Pioneer Valley Montessori School, 1524 Parker Street, Springfield, MA, 01129, to benefit the Gail Supanich Memorial Fund.

The first duty of an educator; stir up life, but leave it free to develop.”
